We may have run out of logs for collection but that doesn’t mean you have to go cold. Providing you have an open fire or multi-fuel stove, you can keep warm with a coal fire. Find out more below.

WHO CAN BURN HOMEFIRE SMOKELESS COAL?

If you have an open fire or multi-fuel stove you can burn smokeless coal. A multi-fuel stove can usually be identified by the presence of a grate and ashtray. A grate is made up of metal bars with holes in between. Coal fires work best if the air is drawn from underneath. The grate allows for this as well as the removal of ash onto an ashtray.

5 STEPS TO THE PERFECT COAL FIRE

A coal fire requires high temperatures to be reached quickly. This can be achieved by using firelighters and kindling to create a bed to light the coal on.

  1. Firstly, make sure the ash is cleared out and the air vents are open. Unlike a wood fire, coal fires favor airflow from underneath. If there is a bed of ash or the ash tray is too full, the air flow will be restricted. Most multi-fuel stoves have a riddle that moves the grate to help the ash drop down into the ash tray.
  2. Place a couple of firelighters in the base and add kindling, ensuring you leave air gaps.
  3. Light the firelighters and then add a few more pieces of kindling to build the fire.
  4. Once the kindling is lit, add a generous amount of smokeless coal, covering the kindling.
  5. Give the coal time to catch and then enjoy the warmth
